What Pop Culture Gets Right and Wrong About Witches. In TV, movies, and real life, women have been at the forefront of the years biggest stories so this Halloween season, were looking at pop cultures most wicked depictions of female power. On a recent October night, three witches dressed all in black made their way across the river from New Jersey to Vultures offices in Tribeca. Yema Rose, Haleigh, and Brielle are members of a coven with four other witches, most of whom identify as queer and femme. All of them are in their 2. Their first meeting as a coven took place just after last Halloween, on Samhain, a pagan holiday marking the beginning of winter. They meet every other week for lessons in spellcraft  they take online courses through the School of Witchery  and vegan feasts. They also make up their own holidays, like Gaylentines Day. Its like Galentines, but a lot more queer. We were gathered to discuss representation of witches in the media, and I asked them to begin by naming their favorite witch in popular culture. God, just one asked Yema Rose. Coven Comic' title='Coven Comic' />After months of teasing, Ryan Murphy finally revealed TK TK as the title of the new season of American Horror Story at ComicCon. After a moment of consideration, she declared, Sabrina. Shes my homegirl. When I was very young, I saw Witches of Eastwick for the first time, said Brielle. Yaas, agreed Yema Rose, lightly snapping her fingers. Charmed was very formative for me, said Haleigh. Alyssa Milanos character Phoebe was definitely the one who I gravitated towards, because she was the troublemaker, she didnt do things by the book, and she was also a little slutty. The girls all laughed. Actually, she was really slutty, Haleigh conceded. Below, the highlights from our roving conversation about what pop culture gets right and wrong about witches, the feminist power of witchcraft in media, and their biggest problem with Disney movies. I asked the girls to reflect on the history of representations of witches in various artistic mediums over the centuries. Historically, they pointed out, representations have fallen into two basic categories the ugly decrepit hag and the young hypersexualized woman who exists for male consumption. Probably one of the most popular early witches would be the Wicked Witch of the West, said Haleigh. Of course, The Wizard of Oz is just one of many witch movies that sets up a conflict between good and bad witches. Take that iconic 9. The Craft. There, the girls professed mixed feelings. I love The Craft as the epitome as the 9. Haleigh. Its interesting, every time feminism makes a turn for a new era, theres also a resurgence in witchcraft. You saw it in the 7. The Craft, Hocus Pocus Sabrina, added Yema Rose. Buffy. You saw this resurgence of the 9. Haleigh continued. So for that reason, I really, really love The Craft. Its so iconic aesthetically and its still super influential on a lot of modern fashion when you look in groups of witchy femmes. She raised her eyebrows, perhaps nodding to the fact that her blunt black bangs, chunky rings, and pentagram necklace could have fit in easily with the L. A. coven. And there is some real witchcraft in it, she said. Some of the rituals that they do and the spells that they do have a base in real witchcraft. But in any movie where theres a white witch and a dark witch, thats just another way to pin women against each other, said Yema Rose. Which is what The Craft did. Instead of these women coming together and working together, theyre fighting each other. Its like Mean Girls with witches, said Brielle. Still, its so good. You can love something for many reasons and still criticize it, agreed Haleigh. The girls felt less conflicted about the 1. Practical Magic. Thats one of my favorites because the whole story is just about the women in the movie. Yes, its a love story and there are men but they exist on the sidelines, said Haleigh. Theyre accessories, said Brielle. Its really about these three different generations of women. Those aunts are some of my favorite, added Haleigh, of the two older witches played with delightful campiness by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest. Theyre who I want to grow up to be. The girls erupted in a chorus of cheers and agreement. Haleigh said that one of her absolute favorites is the 2. The Witch, which shes seen six times. When Yema Rose bemoaned the fact that she hadnt seen it yet, Haleigh promised her theyd watch it together at one of their bimonthly coven meetings. The movie tells the story of a 1. New England wilderness, culminating with a young womans decision to become a witch. Shes a young woman about to start her journey into puberty, Haleigh explained. Even her own brother sexualizes her, Brielle said. Shes 1. 4 and the family is already talking about selling her off to be married. So many witch stories tell this story Women come into their magic at the same time as they come into puberty. Their magic lines directly up with their sexual blossoming. Haleigh said. At the beginning, shes not a witch at all. But after her family is destroyed, shes like, I have nothing and Im just going to find my power. She literally walks naked into the woods and sees the fire and the witches writhing around it. Its not necessarily a realistic depiction of what witches do or ever did do, but I really connected to the idea that you find witchcraft through persecution. I think thats why a lot of people are drawn to witchcraft  they dont fit in, theyre queer or a person of color or just a little weird. The girls nodded in agreement. They also appreciated the question the young woman must answer, poised by a devil type character, before she decides to become a witch Wouldst thou like the taste of butterA pretty dress Wouldst thou like to live deliciously Pretty much Gaylentines Day, in a nutshell. So, what are the worst and most irritating depictions of witches in pop cultureYema Rose mentioned The Little Mermaids Ursula Brielle mentioned Sleeping Beautys Maleficent. Theyre super spiteful and envious of the protagonist whos supposed to be so young and innocent and beautiful. They spend the whole movie constantly trying to sabotage the young girl, said Yema Rose. Fuck Disney. Ive always loved the villains, admitted Haleigh. Even Ursula, said Brielle. Her makeup was on point. Generally what theyre going for, though, is that shes supposed to be ugly and evil, said Haleigh. And were hot, said Brielle. Thats another thing. On a very superficial level, witches are not ugly, nodded Haleigh. Were really cute. The conversation turned to another Disney witch flick, Hocus Pocus. The Sanderson sisters are all so fun and whimsical, said Brielle, but the one thing that really bothered me was the idea that theres a devil behind a coven of witches and its got to be some type of masculine evil presence. I mean, that trope  its old and boring, and its just not true. Were so incredibly far removed from that. The girls murmured their agreement. The idea that were dependent on the patriarchy, said Yema Rose. Witches as just a servant for a man, doing a mans bidding continued Haleigh. When in reality added Yema Rose. A rovinare la ritrovata serenit ci pensano prima gli psicopatici Fiona e Dallas che vogliono emulare Franklin e uccidere Vivien e Violet e poi Hayden, lamante di Ben, che fa visita alluomo per dirgli che incinta, cos Larry che vuole da Ben i soldi per ricomprare la Casa e riconquistare la ex moglie Constance la uccide in Casa a sua volta Hayden uccider Trevis, amante di Constance. Le cose si complicano ulteriormente quando Violet si suicida dopo aver scoperto da Constance e dalla medium Billie Dean Howard che Tate un assassino e un fantasma. Ma lapice della disgrazia avviene quando Vivien muore in Casa dopo aver dato alla luce Jeffrey, figlio di Ben, morto poco dopo e Michael figlio di Tate, vivo e sano nonostante solo sei mesi di gestazione. Sconvolto dalla perdita, Ben medita il suicidio Vivien e Violet cercano di convincerlo a scappare col gemello vivo ma egli non ci riesce poich Hayden lo impicca. Mentre gli Harmon, tutti morti e ora riuniti, e i fantasmi buoni cacciano i nuovi proprietari della Casa prima che ne rimangano vittime, Constance rapisce il piccolo Michael e lo alleva come fosse suo figlio. Massachusetts suor Jude ex cantante che ha preso i voti dopo aver investito ubriaca una ragazzina ed essere fuggita dirige con estremo rigore il manicomio Briarcliff insieme al monsignor Howard, uomo ambizioso che mira al papato, al Dr. Arden un sadico medico che usa i pazienti come cavie e alla docile suor Mary Eunice che per viene posseduta da un demone che la rende spietata e pazzoide. Tra i pazienti spiccano, oltre a quelli di lunga data Pepper, Grace e Shelley, il serial killer Kit Walker, noto come Bloody Face perch scuoia le sue vittime, che per sostiene di essere innocente e di esser stato rapito dagli alieni e la giornalista lesbica Lana Winters, ricoverata con linganno da suor Jude dopo che si intrufolata al Briarcliff per intervistare Kit e sottoposta a terribili terapie riparative. Insieme a Kit arriva anche il Dr Oliver Thredson, lo psichiatra che deve fare una perizia su di lui, il quale fa scappare Lana e la porta a casa sua dove le confessa di essere Bloody Face, la stupra e cerca di ucciderla per fortuna Lana scappa con la confessione registrata, ma ha un incidente e viene catturata e riportata al Briarcliff. Qui Lana si avvicina a Kit che ormai sicuro di essere stato rapito dagli alieni giacch Grace gli ha confessato di essere stata rapita anche lei, di aver visto sua moglie viva e di aspettare un figlio suo. Le cose si complicano ulteriormente quando una paziente che sostiene di essere Anna Frank accusa Arden di essere il nazista Hans Grper. Jude, per scoprire la verit, assume il cacciatore di nazisti Sam Goodman il quale per viene ucciso da suor Mary Eunice che, inoltre, libera dalla cella il killer Leigh Emerson in modo che uccida Jude. Per fortuna la suora ha la meglio ma viene anchella ricoverata al Briarcliff perch accusata del tentato omicidio di Emerson e dellomicidio del guardiano Frank, ucciso in realt da suor Mary Eunice. Jude, capita lingiustizia che ha perpetrato nei confronti di Lana, riesce a farla fuggire con laiuto della madre superiora Claudia e cos la donna consegna il nastro con la confessione di Thredson alla polizia, poi lo uccide. Scagionato, Kit viene dimesso e obbliga monsignor Howard, che ha ucciso Shelley per nascondere gli esperimenti di Arden e suor Mary Eunice a dimettere anche Grace e ridarle il loro bambino, Thomas. Tornato a casa, Kit trova la moglie Alma con una figlia sua, Julia. Intanto suor Mary Eunice prende il comando del manicomio insieme al Dr. Arden, con il quale ha intrapreso una sorta di relazione sessuale. Monsignor Howard, stanco della supremazia della suora, la uccide spingendola gi dal terzo piano del manicomio liberandola cos anche dal demone che la possedeva e Arden, deciso a non poter vivere senza Mary Eunice, si suicida. Lana, precedentemente violentata, partorisce il figlio di Thredson ma, non sentendolo suo, lo d in adozione scrive inoltre un libro sulla sua esperienza che diventa subito un best seller e la rende famosa in tutta lAmerica. Kit, Alma, Grace, Julia e Thomas invece vivono tutti insieme ma Alma, temendo che Grace possa far tornare gli alieni, la uccide, venendo poi rinchiusa al Briarcliff, ora centro di recupero per detenute dove muore lanno dopo. Kit fa liberare Jude dal manicomio e la ospita in casa propria lanno dopo lei muore e Kit convince Lana a filmare un reportage su Briarcliff e uno su Arden coinvolgendo anche monsignor Howard che, pieno di sensi di colpa e rimorsi, si suicida. Johnny, figlio di Lana e Oliver, ormai adulto e schizofrenico, entra al Briarcliff dove uccide tre falsi Bloody Face, aggredisce gli sposi Leo e Teresa e cerca di scuoiare la donna come faceva il padre.
